This Juneteenth, let’s have a wave of substance. Keep your symbolism.

I’m here to remind you that substance is always greater than symbolism. Dismantle systemic racism and reconfigure law enforcement to purge the racist leo(s).

Juneteenth is tomorrow, great. Learn the history, but then go do something substantive to help the Black American community move closer to equality.
I don’t want to hug it out and sing songs.

want my children, my cousins, every Black American / Black adjacent kid that I ever tutored, loved and cared about to be able to go to university and not experience implicit bias. I want them to graduate and go for a job and not be discriminated against because of their Black skin, their thick beautiful hair, their Afrocentric features, their Black sounding names.

I want policies that will allow young Black mothers to give birth without being 3x times as likely to die in childbirth than their white counterpart.

I want the unemployment rate in Auburn Gresham / 79th / Chicago to come down from 30% to match the national average of 15%. I want Black unemployment reduced by creating policies that attack and eradicate employment discrimination. I want policies that stop Black Americans from being the last hired and first fired during in this country. I want punitive legislation created that punishes temp work offices who discriminate against Black Americans who are desperately looking for work.

want food deserts eradicated and for there to be equality in lending to Black businesses so there are Black American coops built and Black Americans can get healthy, fresh food.
